Report from Teal.

The wind was forecast westerly but the local geography means the wind hits the mountains further north and funnels the wind down the Gareloch from the NW. And so it was: a classic NW wind and the Race Officers obliged with the classic NW course. A beat across and up to the D mark off Rahane (middle W side of the Gareloch), and then downwind to the finish via the G mark off Gullybridge on the E side (acting as a sort of wide spreader mark!). And then a short reach down to A off the moorings, followed by a wonderful long beat back to D, before finishing directly down to Y.

So, one of the best courses in the roster. But the fixed start line is biased with the shore end being favoured. And with a looming shallow shore and sea wall to intimidate those wanting to win it!

Thia is now jointly in the hands of jointly helmed by Michael Knox and Peter Brown [edit – Peter’s wife will be relieved to know that he has not bought a share in another boat!] and they’re gelling well – and getting more aggressively in the mix at the start (as well as often going well on the beat). And so it was with Thia taking on Catriona (who always like to lead in where possible!). Teal happily followed in close behind, slightly higher on the line but ensuring she could not be ‘hooked’ by Catriona (luffed up over the line). Thia dropped down. Teal chased Catriona in.

Catriona eventually called for room to tack, not leaving it too late. “You tack” responded Teal and Catriona did. Teal didn’t though. And instead ducked to squeeze the last out of the line before tacking so she was on top and controlling the beat on starboard. Halcyone did likewise and started well following Teal across the loch. Dione had started lower down the line, going well but lower and left of the fleet. Thia in the middle following Catriona.

Teal sailed high and fast and by the other side of the loch was clearly in the lead and in control. And that to some extent was that. Halcyone crossed Catriona but couldn’t make it stick and Catriona sailed well to cement a clear second by the D mark. It was now a game of sailing well and not making mistakes in good wind on a good course. A broad reach to G under spinnaker, gybe and down through the line to A. Plenty of spinnaker practice tonight for crews (or Charles single-handed in Catriona). Drop and round A for the cracking long beat back to D.

Teal stood on for a bit to tack and cover Catriona. Who surprisingly did tack and allow herself to be covered. Without much wriggling. Perhaps her skipper felt a good 2nd was ok and the series was wrapped up? Or merely packing her spinnaker (how he sails so well while doing this is a mystery)?

Halcyone kept going well – newish crew getting up to speed – and took a good 3rd. Dione will have regretted 4th after a good series so far.

Report from the Secretary.
Champagne wind. It would be churlish to comment on the variations which are typical of the Gareloch. On the water race officer Barrie Choules was able to select a course starting with a true beat to windward to B, off Silvers. The only compromise being the pin end bias of the starting line, unavoidable with fixed starting marks.
Teal got away well from Catriona (no longer single handed now that her crew has finished exams) with Dione champing at Catriona’s counter. Teal was making life difficult for any boat which tried to follow down the Shandon shore. Hermes had quietly tacked away early, along with Halcyone. When Dione went, Catriona followed. Dione tacked back to fight it out with Teal. Those who stuck to the Clynder shore prospered. Hermes first at B with Catriona obliged to give her mark room. Such was the lead that Hermes lost only one place by virtue of not setting a spinnaker on the run back across the loch. Teal and Dione delayed each other, Zephyrus kept out of trouble and was always in the hunt.
The next windward leg to Clynder was a matter of the wind being kind. Teal and Dione stuck to the Shandon shore to begin with and it did not pay.
There was little scope for overtaking on the last leg of the round, A reach back to the starting area. In the gusty wind, sometimes forward of the mast, a spinnaker would have been trying.
Time for a shorter second round with a beat to B again. Zephyrus took a place from Teal. Luna ended up beating down the middle of the loch, against tide, and lost a place to Thalia.
Teal tried her best to reel in Zephyrus but the last two legs were both reaches, not conducive to passing. She made her spinnaker work for a little while on the final leg but it was not enough.

Race report from the Secretary

The Gareloch was glassy in places as we met in the car park.  Overcast but dry, people thought to take waterproofs which was as well.

With wind blowing from the Shandon shore, Race Officer Iain MacGillivray [& Assistant RO Ufo Sutter!] was not able to set a start to windward.  In the light air he sent us on a run to C, at the north end of Clynder, and back.

The wind increased, both in strength and changeability, and with it came rain.  The sort which gets down your neck.

Dione and Catriona had a battle to the left side of the leg.  Dione, to windward, left insufficient room for the leech of her spinnaker and there was a brushing of sails.  Having to take down a spinnaker for penalty turns leads to substantial delay.

Meanwhile, Thalia, Halcyone and Hermes had prospered on the right side of the leg and were at C early.  Thalia (just in the water, her first race of the year) rounded with a substantial lead from Halcyone and Catriona.

Catriona tacked away to clear her air and then sailed especially badly whilst trying to fix a problem (of her own making) with a spinnaker sheet.

Iain sent us on a second round.  Spinnakers this time were more awkward of account of gusts associated with changes of direction.  Dione profited from hers and led Halcyone at C.  Thalia well in front.

Catriona was briefly optimistic about gaining a place on the beat back to the finish.  The average of the gusts and shifts kept Halcyone ahead of her.

Thalia had rounded the wrong mark at the end of the first round.  Her good work was in vain.

Going ashore from the moorings, some of us were wet.  Others very wet.

Race report from Teal

The wind was good, strong and gusty. But east-ish which prevents upwind starts. Sundays require an on-the-water race officer and there was negotiation about who would take it on. Ceres stated they were “just coping” given the wind so Teal stepped in. Tempted by a special S course to C or D but in the end plonked for a long classic Gareloch course starting with a downwind leg to C.

Teal lead over the line with Catriona behind and lower. Catriona and Dione stayed further left. Catriona raised her kite – boldly given wind and doubly so given she was single-handed. Dione and Teal goose-winged their jibs which seemed to work nearly as well. Halcyone meanwhile – defending her wind – looked like she was sailing Ceres up to Faslane. In the end the wind had perhaps been a bit better further left and Catriona rounded C first followed by Dione and Teal. And sailing towards Faslane had not been the way to go. Especially since Ceres managed to get ahead of Halcyone anyway.

The beat from C across to F was ‘full conditions’. Trim and feathering needed to prevent excessive heeling and weather helm. Catriona’s experience paying dividends. Teal keeping up and managing to sail higher than Dione. When Dione tacked Teal crossed easily. Catriona led at the F mark. Followed by Teal then Dione having lost some ground.

Teal closed the gap on Catriona on a gusty reach to B (perhaps weight on the boat helping?). Teal rounded tight behind Catriona – and wary of an immediate tack and trap by Catriona – immediately tacked. And did so more smartly that Catriona with her nose in front. Catriona tacked off again.

Up across to Z off Blairvadach and then a loop back to F and then B again and back to Z. Dione also getting past Catriona on the windward leg from B to Z. Having completed this second round lap, the race would often have ended at Z. But we were a minute inside the hour mark and so, as per the class rules, another round was required! No places changed but it was fun if a little tiring!

Report from John Campbell on Circe

Sunday morning was ominously quiet on the loch, an echo maybe of the 2021 season but by lunchtime there was a nice breeze which had set in from west / south west, and the sun was out. The afternoon was set for some “champagne sailing” (as one skipper quipped with his peaked cap and sunglasses on!).

No RO, so Mr Choules took on the mobile RO duties and set course H6. Unfortunately Hermes (mainsail hoisting problems) and Halcyone (jib clew block shattered) were late to the line so had their own race independent of the main fleet.

On the start line it wasn’t too congested, however Teal was forced upwind of the Z mark so ended up tacking round and following on having dropped a number of places.

Up to B, and Zephyrus was going very well, she had the edge at the windward mark, ahead of Catriona and then it was a broad reach down to F. The considerate skipper of the naval destroyer managed to avoid the fleet meaning that no one was compromised as she sailed up to Faslane. Most of the boats had their spinnakers up, although Circe (sailing single handed) stayed with white sails only – surprisingly not losing that much distance. Round F, and Catriona had taken the lead from Zephyrus, followed by Dione and Teal.

There was a good beat over to C, back to Y, and then back to B for the second round by which time Dione had moved into second place. At the windward mark, Teal had Zephyrus on starboard, and snuck past into 3rd, Circe followed behind and Zephyrus dropped back into 5th place.

The reach down to C had some potential for errors as there were some quiet holes in close to the shore, however those positions held as the fleet crossed back to Y to finish the race. A really lovely afternoon to be out on the loch.

It was also good to see our Convenor Prof. John Blackie out crewing in Halcyone after the sad death of Jane, his wife, earlier that week.

Wind to frustrate the race officer.  We had two rounds of a short course across the loch and back.  It ended up with more reaching than anything.

Dione got away well and found the best wind in the loch with Circe and Halcyone following.  Towards the end of the second round, Gareloch wind was up to its usual tricks.  Dione sailed into very light air and was being carried past the finishing mark by tide.  Circe set a spinnaker in an area of pressure and almost took the win.  Dione found a bit of boat speed just in time.  Catriona caught up to Halcyone but could not make the pass.

Sun 26th Sep – last race of the 2021 season

(Report from Halcyone.)

Last race, lots of wind, last chance for a decent sail in a remarkably windless season.

Six helms and crews showed up to race. Zephyrus didn’t race, she had just returned from Bute, the run back had taken three and half hours, at times surfing at 10 knots.

Several crews dithered on the moorings before the race, wondering whether the pro-longed gusts over 20 knots would persist, or get worse as forecast. Hermes opted for a neat reef in her main.

On the way to the start Kelana came alongside the fleet, with several Gareloch sailors on board, filming the occasion, just back from the RNCYC’s final cruising muster.

Teal took on Race officer duties, and set a course along the Shandon shore. In the boisterous conditions it was hard to hear the starting signals. Teal and Halcyone made good starts, Catriona closed on the start mark too early and had to duck behind Teal. Thalia, Hermes and Ceres weren’t far behind. Athene hadn’t heard the signals and opted to follow without racing.

Closing on the windward mark Teal, Halcyone and Catriona were close, Teal slightly ahead, Halcyone crossed Catriona on port to round the mark in second. Neither Teal nor Halcyone opted for spinnakers initially. Catriona on the other hand, always motivated by being behind popped hers up, slewed to windward, just avoided broaching, got it settled, overtook Halcyone, so Teal popped hers up. The three had stood out well into the loch planning to gybe to the leeward mark later. Meantime, Thalia reached along closer inshore and looked like she would round the mark first, she didn’t, not quite.

Rounding the windward mark for the second time Catriona chased Teal out into the loch. Halcyone and Thalia stayed inshore. The four began to converge again at the leeward mark, but still in the same order. Rounding the mark Teal and Catriona once again struck out into the loch. Halcyone and Thalia made shorter tacks inshore. Approaching the Z mark and the finish line, Halcyone was well ahead of Teal and Catriona, they had been busy defending and attacking each other and had forgotten to race the rest of the fleet.

Might Halcyone win, could we finish after two laps, no, we had only been racing for 52 minutes, not the requisite minimum hour, we had to do another round.

Striking out for the windward mark again Halcyone’s excitement was short-lived, her guest crew spotted the starboard lower shroud dangling unattached, the mast wasn’t fully supported. Teal and Catriona caught up, Halcyone jury rigged a repair, kept in touch, but couldn’t catch them.

Teal crossed the finish line first, rounding off a run of first places. After a frustrating season she had her mojo back.
